Week 20 - Patience Young Jedi

20 10 2008

Yet another week has passed by and the strength on my left side has improved big time.

I can now do one-legged heel raises unassisted. It is definitely not like my right side but this is huge for me. Yesterday, I was at the gym and a little voice in my head told me to get on the treadmill to give it a go. But I resisted and held firm with my plan not to run until November. Now, that may change to the last week of October but until then I will continue to do some strengthening along with my physio.

Happy healing to all. Thanks for reading.

Hoss

Congrats on your one-legged heel raise; I cannot do a completely unassissted one yet. I am, however, running pretty consistently. Good luck on your continued recovery.

Hi Hoss,
I was extremely jealous after reading your post because I am also at 20 weeks and just got back from seeing my ortho and he is suggesting I do “serial casting” for 6 weeks since my ankle is still not at 90 degrees :( I spent 12 weeks doing PT, as well as exercises 2x’s/day at home. Guess I haven’t been agressive enough. I can’t imagine going back into a cast, but doc says I have “plateaued” with PT…..I have a week to decide what to do — cast or not. I am using a cane and limp, but wondering whether I should still have hope that I can get this ankle back to normal on my own……
Congrats on all your great progress!!!!
Marianne

drkpllrd,
Good for you dude. I was going to start running a few weeks ago but decided to remain patient. Now if this was April or May, I probably would have pushed up my running date to get ready for the triathlon season. Nothing much happening during the winter so I can chill out and take it easier now. All the best.

marianne,
Sorry to hear about your woes. Certainly very puzzling. I can’t imagine you being any more or less aggressive than me. I was in the best shape of my life just before the ATR so that probably had a lot to do with my successful recovery. Good luck with everything, I’ll be rooting for you.

Hoss,
Just checked out your page for the first time. An Ironman?! Wow. I was doing some Tri’s before this happened too. I was hoping that maybe I’d be able to run in time to train for next season, I know registrations for races are just starting to open up, and I’m itchin to go! What about biking? Could you start on the bike before running?? And 20 weeks seems pretty speedy as far as feeling ready to run! That’s good news!

Biking you can do no problem. I was biking once I got out of the cast. I think this definitely helped with the speedy recovery. Good luck to you.
